Welcome to Cottage Hill Dairy

Back in the day...  The original homesteaders of this property established it as a cow dairy.  The original barn sat down in the gulley of a seasonal creek that ran through it.  Decendants of the builder have told me that it was "Belly Deep" in mud.  That barn is gone now, but the foundation remains.  And the old road and remnants of a spar hoist are nearby.  A pond, now silted in, would have been in front. The barn pictured here was built later and relocated to higher ground. It was in bad shape when we took ownership and we have begun restoring our barn to be functional as well as beautiful.

We endeavered to build this property once again as a dairy.  We chose to use goats.  Goats have a low impact on the land, and an appetite for plants that cows ignore.  Our milking does are pastured on a mix of browse best suited for goats.  Brome, orchard grass and fescue make up the majority of the grasses.  We mix in red clover, hairy vetch, and sweet rye grass.  Along with some chickory and buckwheat. Our farming principle is influenced by Permaculture and it's many adherents.  Add a hefty dose of love for the land and a desire to see it worked in a sustainable manner.

We started with 4 Oberhasli does in 2016 and now have 75 Oberhasli and Sable does and bucks. Most of our goats are born on our farm. Not only do we name all our goats, but the goats come when they are called by name, usually wagging their tail in anticipation of a handful of crunchy peanuts and a loving tip to tail appraisal of their body condition and overall health and appearance.  From the time we assist the kids with latching on for the first taste of colostrum from their dam’s teat to their first freshening and beyond, our goats are treated as much more than livestock.
